Dr Kissling's Suitcase

Dr Kissling's suitcase, Dumfries Museum, 2019 This is a photograph of Dr Kissling's open suitcase. Inside is a jumble of papers, family photographs, and personal possessions. The suitcase is old and worn and the handle is broken at one side.   This suitcase held the personal belongings that Dr Kissling had with him when he died. The initials I.K. on the front suggest that his mother Johanna may have brought it to Scotland from Germany after the Second World War. It was brought to Dumfries Museum in 2018.   Although Dr Kissling had once been wealthy he died with very little money and few possessions. In this suitcase were the things that were most important to him. Many of the objects in this exhibition were found inside the suitcase.   Dr Werner Kissling (1895-1988) was a German photographer and ethnographer who spent most of his life documenting Scottish crafts, architecture, and agricultural practices. He was associated with Dumfries Museum from the mid-1950s until his death in 1988.
