Dr Kissling at an exhibition of his photographs

Dr Kissling at an exhibition of his photographs, Dumfries Museum, 1978   This photograph shows Dr Kissling in profile, standing beside a board displaying some of his photographs.   In 1978 Dr Kissling chose a selection of his best work to be displayed at Dumfries Museum in an exhibition called Werner Kissling: A Retrospective.   It included photographs spanning his whole career as an ethnographer and photographer. These photographs demonstrate the variety of his interests, his ability to engage with people, and his technical skill as a photographer.   The exhibition, with Dr Kissling's original captions, can be seen here.   With thanks to David Lockwood and Elaine Kennedy for providing information.   Dr Werner Kissling (1895-1988) was a German photographer and ethnographer who spent most of his life documenting Scottish crafts, architecture, and agricultural practices. He was associated with Dumfries Museum from the mid-1950s until his death in 1988.
