17th Century

Pochettes such as this were small stringed instruments played with a bow similar to a violin but would have been played along the forearm or held upright rather than under the chin.  These were used by dance teachers who could carry them in their pockets and also became popular with sailors who had room for these small instruments in their sea chests.
