German treble viol

18th century German treble viol. Treble viols have a similar size to a viola but is characterised by its deeper body. A treble viol is tuned in D, with ascending perfect fourths with the exception of a major third between strings 3 and 4.   This treble viol presents with eye-catching details. Its back and ribs feature alternate bands of ebony and walnut with ivory purfling, and its tailpiece and fingerboard overlaid with ivory and inlaid in ebony with scrolling foliage. The table also has an inset ivory rose.
