Spirit Tester

This spirit tester is made up of 18 blown glass beads in a wooden lidded box.  The beads sink if liquid is proof.  They are numbered according to different spirits and there is a key to the beads inside the lid of the box.   Spirit testers were used by excisemen to test the proof of alcohol to calculate the duty to be paid. Robert Burns would have used one when he worked as an exciseman.
