Pin cushion made of wood from Robert Burns' travelling kist

This pin cushion is made of wood from the kist or chest which Robert Burns had made to transport his belongings prior to his proposed emigration to Jamaica in 1786.   In the winter of 1785 and 1786 Robert Burns had resolved to leave Scotland, taking Mary Campbell with him.  Whether it was her sudden death or the success of the Kilmarnock edition of his poems which deflected him from this course of action is not known.   Relics of Robert Burns and his family were treasured and preserved and those who could not afford to acquire entire articles made do with fragments such as this.
