Paperweight with Robert Burns' signature

Description:

The document which once carried this example of Robert Burns' signature has not survived.  The signature itself has been preserved within the glass of the paperweight.

 

Almost immediately after Burns' death in 1796, admirers began to collect and preserve examples of his writing.  Those who could not obtain manuscripts of poems or letters made do with fragments such as this.
