Nutmeg grater which belonged to Robert Burns

This nutmeg grater belonged to Robert Burns.  It is contained in a small red lacquered box with a cavity in the base for collecting the grated nutmeg.  It is compact and portable and may have been used by Burns whilst travelling.   Nutmeg was a popular spice in the 18th century.  It was used to flavour both sweet and savoury dishes and was added to mixtures of whisky or brandy and hot water.  Its pungency could be used to disguise unsavoury food and it was often carried by travellers.   Relics of Robert Burns and his household were treasured and preserved.
