This manuscript letter is from Sir Walter Scott to William Grierson, dated 28th January 1822. He is acknowledging his honorary membership of the Dumfries Burns Club.
The letter is a single sheet, folded, and written on one side only. It is stamped three times and includes a red wax seal.
Sir / I am honoured by the intimation that the Dum- / fries Burns Club have distinguished me by admit: / ting me as an honorary Member to which I am not / otherwise entitled excepting by my sincere and heart / ;felt admiration of the great national Poet whose / memory it is the purpose of this institution to / celebrate. / I beg you will make my respectful thanks / acceptable to the Members and believe me their and your / Obliged & humble Servant / Walter Scott / Edinr / 28 January 1822 / Wm Grierson Esq
