Handbill announcing a public meeting

Handbill, published in 1858, in which the Freemasons of Dumfries announce plans to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Robert Burns by a public procession on 25th January 1859.   The centenary of Robert Burns' birth saw nation wide celebrations of  "Scotia's Bard".  This handbill describes the proposals for marking the event in the town in which he died and was buried.  The printed handbill has a Masonic symbol at the top.
