Cast of Robert Burns' Skull

At the beginning of the 19th century Robert Burns' body was exhumed for study. The medical professional were very interested in studying skulls at this time as it was a believed that there could be links between the shape of the skull and intellect and character. Skulls of great minds such as Burns were examined to see if they bore any unusual characteristics. Permission was granted for a cast of Burns' skull to be taken when his body was exhumed. This plaster cast is one of several that were taken from the original mould.
