Nae mercy, then, for airn or steel;

The Brawnie, bainie, Ploughman-cheil,

Brings hard overchip, wi' sturdy wheel

The strong forchammer,

Till block an' studdie ring an' reel,

Wi' dinsome clamour.

 

Robert Bryden produced a series of illustrations of scenes from Robert Burns' poems soon after his return to Ayrshire following his studies in London and travels in Spain and Italy. He also produced etchings of local sites with which the poet was connected.
