Children in Vitez

Description:
These pencil sketches of children in the Bosnian town of Vitez were done when Howson visited the town in June 1993 as an Official War Artist. Howson is an excellent draughtsman and he employed this skill to express something of the horrors of the situation he was witnessing in Bosnia: Whilst sorrowful, serious eyes peer out from the carefully observed sketch on the lower half of the page, the heavy, quickly drawn black lines of the sketches in the upper half brutalize their subjects reflecting the violence to which they have already been exposed.
