Ruthwell Pond Curling Cup

"Presented by Viscountess Stormont. Won by William Pagan, Jan 1897."   Lady Stormont presented the cup to the Dumfriesshire tenants of her husband, Lord Mansfield, in 1893.  The cup was to be played for by individual curlers on an annual basis on Ruthwell Pond.  The eventual winner was to be the curler who won it twice in succession, or three times in all.  In January 1897 the final competition was between two men, both of whom had won the cup on previous occasions.  Eventually William Pagan defeated Gordon Grierson by 26 shots to 25.
