Brown's Manual of Bowling

James Brown, the Burgh Assessor, was a founder member of Sanquhar Bowling Club and a famous bowler.  He played an important part in the formation of the Scottish Bowling Association in 1892, and prepared its constitution and rules.   In 1871 it was popularly held that Sanquhar shoud have a bowling club.  A committee was formed to obtain a suitable piece of ground for a green and bowlshouse, and the Sanquhar Bowling Club opened for play on the 9th June 1871.   In 1916 the club resolved 'to admit ladies to membership at an annual subscription of 7/6', but the women of Sanquhar did not make the most of this opportunity and it was not until 1950 that a ladies section was formed.
