The Crucifixion

This painting was donated to the museum from the collection at a local estate.  The damage down the centre is because it has been painted on two wooden boards which have shrunk over time, splitting the paint.  The painting appears to have been cut down as there are two angels only half shown above the cross.   The image shows Christ on the cross with his mother, the Virgin Mary, in the red cloak being supported, possibly by Mary Magdalene.  The man on the other side is St John and behind him is a man in armour, probably the Centurion who pierced Christ's side with a spear and declared "Truly this man was the son of God" (Mark 15:39).
