Matchbox tin

English apothecary John Walker produced the world's first friction match in 1826. His invention lit when struck against any hard surface and was marketed as the Lucifer. The small tin matchbox, made from steel pressed with tin plate, has a compartment inside comprising a hinged lid which could be used to strike a match, and also a small round pot section to hold matches in place. The friction match had several disadvantages, however, as it ignited explosively, produced a terrible smell, and was poisonous.
