Description:
William Copland was Provost of Dumfries in the early 1700s.  He was a prosperous merchant of strong character.  In 1694 on a voyage to San Sebastian he was taken by French privateers in the Bay of Biscay.  His ship was released after its cargo had been removed.  This portrait was painted by a follower of Sir Godfrey Kneller in 1731.
