Bell weights from Wigtown

A set of avoirdupois bell-shaped weights made by John Snart and counter-marked 'D.L.K.' for issue by Lanark.   Following the Act of Union in 1707 there was an attempt to rationalise Scotland's system of weights and measures and all burghs were ordered to follow the English system.  The weights and measures acquired in 1707 by Wigtown are one of the most complete sets surviving in Scotland.
