Kilmarnock Burgh Coat of Arms

Kilmarnock was created a Burgh of Barony in 1592 by the 5th Lord Boyd. Royal Burghs were created by the monarch. Burghs of Barony were created by the local lord. The coat of arms of burghs which came into existence in this way were normally based on symbolism derived from the heraldry of the Lord's family. Kilmarnocks coat of arms resembles closely that of the Boyds of Kilmarnock.
