Black bodice made by Charles Hawthorn & Son tailor, Whithorn in the late 19th century.
The bodice is made of satin and heavily decorated with jet beading. White beads decorate the high neckline. The internal construction reveals the use of bone to create the highly fitted shape. Hook and eye fastenings are sewn in to attach to the skirt, with an internal belt for extra fastening. The placing of removable underarm protectors to protect the garment from perspiration was a usual feature, as was the lining of soft cotton.
