Waiting for News

Willie Lopez was one of 116 miners rescued in the Knockshinnoch pit disaster in New Cumnock in 1950. As he lay in hospital recovering from his injuries he was haunted by the knowledge that his father-in-law William was one of thirteen comrades in a separate party, whose lives had been lost. Willie didn't have the heart to tell his wife that it was unlikely William had survived. As the weeks passed Jessie faced up to her father's death and his body was recovered three months after the disaster. Sadly the family first discovered the body had been unearthed when they read it in a newspaper.
