Dean Quarry

The layers of Blond Sandstone that were quarried here are visible behind the group of men.  This image shows just the very top of the quarry wall as the deep pit has filled with water.  It remains in much the same state today where it has a new life as the duck pond within Dean Castle Country Park in Kilmarnock.  The beginning of quarrying here probably dates back to the 14th century when the stone for the castle itself was cut from this spot.
