Miners Gold Washing

Gold is found in the Lowther Hills and was particularly successfully exploited in the 15th & 16th centuries. Panning for gold was a popular pastime for the miners. Many local wedding rings were made from local gold and became prized possessions. In the mid 1800s, a little girl out playing with her friends on the steep slopes of The Dod Hill found a ‘bonnie stane’, which turned out to be a nugget of gold weighing 640G.
