Winding Engine Depth Indicator

Description:

This indicator is from the winding engine house at the Houldsworth colliery, near Patna. The colliery was sunk by the Dalmellington Iron Company in 1900 and was at that time the deepest pit in Ayrshire.

The dial showed the winding engine operator the depth of the cage in the pit shaft. The measurements are in fathoms - 6 feet units.

It used to have a brass pointer but this disappeared long ago, between the pit closing in 1965 and the Dalmellington Conservation Trust acquiring the dial in the 1980s.
