Velometer

Early attempts to ventilate mines included a system using two shafts. At the bottom of one shaft a fire was set, creating an up-draught which in turn drew air down the second shaft ensuring circulation.   Later systems depended on fans with doors and flaps controlling the direction of flow. In the most modern pits, fabric ducting conducted air through extended mine roadways.
