Segments of a Mechanical Coal-Cutter

The first miners used their own physical strength and implements such as picks to cut coal. As the mining industry developed, mechanical means were devised for cutting coal at an increased rate. These coal cutters operated on a principle similar to that of a chain-saw with a series of linked teeth. Each ‘tooth’ was tipped with an extra hard metal alloy.
