Autolite Carbide Lamp

Period:
20th Century
Description:
The carbide lamp was developed in the 1890s.  It functioned by mixing water with calcium carbide to create acetylene gas. This gas burns with a bright white light which, when reflected off the circular screen could be several times brighter than the light that traditional oil lamps could produce.
