Fire Hydrant

Period:
20th Century
Description:

This valve, of a free-flow design, would have been sited below ground level.

The cut-away shows the large brass valve with a rubber sealing cap at its base. The drain tap at the bottom was used to drain water out of the hydrant and so prevent fractures during freezing weather.
