Dumfries Yeomanry Cavalry was formed in 1798 in response to the fear of a French Napoleonic invasion. It became the Royal Dumfriesshire Yeomanry Cavalry in 1803. The desire to create a striking impression often took priority over more practical considerations in the design of military dress and equipment!
