Rococo, also known as Late Baroque, is the name given to the style which replaced the severe and heavy decoration of the reign of Louis XIV. Pretty, frivolous and always asymmetrical, it was characteristic of the reign of Louis XV and of Madame de Pompadour. Originating in France, the style spread to northern Italy, southern Germany, Austria, Russia, and other parts of Europe.
