Dean Castle Arms and Armour

Shields

Large green shield

Description:

This shield of Austrian or Hungarian origin is decorated with a sun motif in its centre and has flamboyant edges with a gilded sunburst design. The motif is surrounded by 6 triangular metal studs on its front which are supports for back rings that would have held straps for carrying the shield. The shield has a wooden base that is covered over with linen fabric. It has been coated in gesso and painted with an oil-based green base.

The shield has a notch in its upper left quadrant which may have been used to balance a polearm weapon.
