Dean Castle Arms and Armour

Rapiers

Spanish shell guard rapier

Period:
16th Century
Description:

Similar to cup hilt rapiers, shell guard rapiers provided excellent protection for the hand in confrontations, especially for opponents who favoured thrusting motion in their strategy.

This shell guard rapier has pierced elements in the guard, and the hilt is richly decorated with scrolls and foliate designs. A large crest sits in the centre of the guard, and a figure on horseback features on the pommel.
