Dean Castle Arms and Armour

Pole Arms and Melee Weapons

Swiss halberd 2

Period:
16th Century
Description:

The halberd was an important polearm weapon as it enabled infantrymen to contend with soldiers on horseback in the field of battle. The halberd has a concave blade for cutting, spike for thrusting and a beak to be used for grappling with calvalry. Towards the later era of its use in battle, the spike often displaced the cleaving element of the weapon as plate armour decreased in use and firearms became more common.
