Openwork left hand dagger

Period:
17th Century
Description:

This left hand dagger has a sharply pointed, double-edged blade with a hollow ground section. The ricasso of the blade bears a maker's mark. It has an openwork basket pommel and terminals on its crossguard and in the centre of its finger loop. Small details, such as braiding on the base and top of the hilt give a refined finish to the weapon, which would have been primarily a fashionable accessory rather than a weapon.
