On the Bladnoch

The Linn (waterfall) of Barhoise on the Bladnoch north-east of Kirkcowan is mentioned in William Nicholson’s marvellous poem The Brownie of Blednoch: “I’ll loup the linn when ye canna wade”. Generations of Kirkcowan children believed from local, oral tradition that the Brownie still lurked in the vicinity of the linn and neighbouring Barhoise farm. The strong-flowing Bladnoch was formerly used to drive a corn mill on the west bank of the river just below the farm. Several Bronze Age round cairns in the vicinity add to the undervalued attractions of this corner of Kirkcowan parish.
