Alice Boyd's Sketchbook from her European Tour

Period:
19th Century
Description:

During the summer of 1873, Alice Boyd made a visit to Europe in the company of William Rosetti (brother of Dante Gabrielle Rossetti and also a memeber of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood), William Bell Scott and Lucy Madox Brown, daughter of Ford Madox Brown, who was to marry William Rossetti the following year.

The majority of the trip was spent in Italy but they stopped first in Chambery in France, then Turin, the Bay of Spezia, Rome, Venice, Verona, Lake Lugano, Bodio and St Gotthard. Most of the sketches in the sketchbook were made during the trip but a few at the end were done after their return.
