Galloway Hillside

Period:
19th Century
Description:

John Campbell Mitchell trained in the Edinburgh College of Art and in Paris. He was a landscape and marine artist, based from 1890 in Edinburgh and from 1904 in Corstophine. He had a particular interest in Galloway and was a regular visitor, but he also painted elsewhere in the west of Scotland. In 1901 he spent some time in the south-west, developing his technique for painting skies and clouds. His work is often characterised by broad sweeps of colour, whether depicting moors, fields, beaches or skies.

The exact location of ths work in Galloway is not known, but was completed soon after he had returned from Paris, and resumed his career in Edinburgh. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1904 and a full member in 1918. It is very likely that he would have known Kirkcudbright arists such as Hornel, Mouncey and Robson, but there is at present no evidence to show who his associates were.
