Stanislas Victore Edouard Lepine was a pupil of French painter Corot, and like his tutor, his work anticipates the Impressionist movement. The Impressionists developed a kind of Realism which attempted to grasp the immediacy of fleeting light effects but which was also informed by an interest in modern colour theory to better represent visual actuality. Lepine exhibited with the Impressionists in 1874.
