Provost David MacKay

David MacKay was Provost of Kilmarnock from 1895 to 1901. He believed strongly in the benefits of art and literature for society and sought to ensure that the people of Kilmarnock enjoyed these benefits. He supported the adoption of the Public Libraries Act and was very influential in encouraging James Dick to donate the money for the building of the Dick Institute.   Sir James Guthrie was born in Greenock and went to University in Glasgow where he studied Law.  However, He fairly quickly decided that Law was not the career for him and turned instead to painting. He became one of the most prominent members of the Glasgow Boys. He spent summer months painting with the Boys at Cockburnspath and Brig O'Turk. In later years he turned to portraiture in which he enjoyed considerable success. He was made President of the RSA in 1902.
