Marion N. Parker

This piece was painted just a few years after Ayrshire-born 'Glasgow Boy' George Henry's visit to Japan where he had developed a freedom of style and an interest in design and the creation of balance. These elements are still evident in this work. From 1900 onward he devoted himself mainly to portrait painting and it is generally felt that after this point his work became less experimental and less interesting. It is thought that the girl in this painting may be a relative of Colonel Parker, Robert Burns's friend who owned the Assloss Estate in Kilmarnock.
