Bluebell Wood

William MacGeorge was born in Castle Douglas. In 1884 he went to Antwerp to study at the Academie des Beaux Arts alongside Edward A Hornel. They both returned to South-west Scotland and remained friends.   Like his friend Hornel, MacGeorge favoured a subject matter of children at play in woodland scenes.  Hornel was influential in encouraging him to lighten his pallet and explore the decorative in his paintings but MacGeorge also retained a truth to nature and an interest capturing the effects of sunlight. His paintings are characterised by dappled sunshine.    MacGeorge's work is of the Kirkcudbright School. Robert Gemmill Hutchison was an admirer of his work and tried to emulate his treatment of sunlight.
