El Espada

Lavery was born in Belfast. He studied at the Haldane Academy in Glasgow and later in Paris alongside fellow Glasgow Boys Thomas Millie Dow, William Kennedy and Alexander Roche. These artists formed what is regarded as the third group of the Glasgow Boys. They spent several summers painting together in Grez-sur-Loing. In 1885 Lavery returned to live in Glasgow and began work on The Tennis Party a painting which shows the influence of Jules Bastien Lepage and is regarded as a major achievement for the Glasgow Boys and for Lavery personally. After this time Lavery was increasingly influenced by Whistler with whom he became friends. He made several visits to Morocco, where he painted work inspired by the North African way of life he saw there. Later in his career he became an accomplished portrait painter like many of the Glasgow Boys but he did not limit himself solely to this subject. He moved away from the aims of the Glasgow Boys but retained his unique style.
