Loch Coruisk

John Duncan is perhaps best known for his involvement with the Celtic Revival, despite his early work and studies outwith Scotland, including London, Belgium and Germany. After settling in Edinburgh, Duncan concentrated on Celticism and Symbolism, and was likely influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites and their legacy. Despite these mystical interests, Duncan was also known for painting more traditional, naturalistic landscapes. It is however possible to trace the links between these two areas, as in a painting such as Loch Coruisk the high and hazy mountains stretching above the Loch could easily recall the myths and legends of the Celts. Duncan's palette here also ties in with his more mystical works, as a golden hue settles across the mountains, while the mysterious depths of the loch are depicted in purple and green tones.
