Birds and Cows

Born Buckhaven, Fife John studied at Edinburgh College of Art from 1948 to 1954. After a year spent travelling, returned to Edinburgh and joined the staff of the College and in 1956 married his fellow student Elizabeth Blackadder.   He paints landscapes and seascapes in broad area of powerful colour, which evoke atmosphere and changing light. His work reveals some influence of Emil Nolde and, like Nolde, is equally effective in oil and watercolour. His more recent work has included the human figure.
